EXPLORE EXPLORE: NEW TOOLS & SOCIAL PRACTICES INSTITUTIONAL PARTNERSHIPS PROGRAM OF INQUIRY

Support Projects through Authoring, Critiques, and Exemplars (SPACE)
A set of structures for teachers and students to manage project-based work and engage in social interactions for learning.

SPACE provides a set of structures to enable teachers and students to engage in ambitious instructional activity in the classroom. SPACE allows teachers to manage the complexities of guiding multiple student projects and makes it possible for students to understand expectations for projects and to manage their own work. SPACE includes supports for peer-to-peer and mentor-to-peer interactions in the development of projects and in the inquiry process.

SPACE:

  • Supports student participation in a cycle of Planning, Investigating, Synthesizing, and Publishing
  • Links project milestones to assessments, standards, and examples of student work
  • Manages student data for easier and more regular access by teachers, administrators, and external stakeholders

Problems of Practice
SPACE is designed to address central challenges in successfully implementing projects in classrooms. These challenges include establishing consistent practices across classrooms, organizing differentiated instruction, and providing opportunities for students to manage their own learning and to collaborate.

Value Added
SPACE adds value to the work of students and teachers in a number of ways. For example, the system allows teachers to structure student activities and make expectations for student work explicit. It creates opportunities for students to review and assess each other's work. It provides easy-to-access data on student work for teachers in making instructional decisions.
