Measures

The IIS activity theory framework guided the development of over 20 new Rasch measures. Following are highlights:

  • Disposition toward innovation

    Orientation toward engaging innovation (EGINV)
    A high score on this measure indicates that the teacher or staff developer is strongly inclined to independently (wo/ pressure) engage with innovations and to help spread word about innovations to colleagues.

  • Personal conceptions of role responsibilities

    Using evidence within a reflective practice orientation (EVIDRP)
    A high score on this measure indicates that a teacher has an understanding of what it means to teach reading that is consistent with a reflective orientation, including active use of assessment information when making instructional decisions.

    Conceptions of individual learning (ROLRN)
    A high score on this measure indicates that a teacher engages with expertise and sources of knowledge external to classroom experience and informal discussions with colleagues. The teacher also takes the initiative to seek out/engage in learning opportunities beyond those offered by the school and district.

  • Engagement with innovation

    Self-Interest in Staff Developer Role (SINTRL)
    A high score on this measure indicates that the literacy staff developer perceives moral and instrumental value in her role and also feels she is valued for the expertise she can offer her school community.

    Self-Efficacy in Staff Developer Role (SEFRL)
    A high score on this item indicates that the individual has strong self-efficacy with regard to the role of the literacy staff developer.

    Instrumental Self-interest in Using PDS2 -- Efficiency (SINT2E)
    A high score on this measure indicates the staff developer believes PDS2 will make her work easier.

    Instrumental Self-Interest in Using PDS2-- Professional Development Work (SINT2W)
    A high score on this measure indicates the staff developer believes that PDS2 will help her accomplish core professional objectives, such as building a learning community of teachers and extending learning opportunities for teachers.

    Social/affective and Moral Self-Interest in Using PDS2 (SINT2S)
    Individuals with a high score on this measure perceive that not only will using PDS2 benefit students and teachers and be supported by the principal, but that teachers will respond positively to the tool.

    Self-efficacy in using PDS2 (SEFP2)
    A high score on this measure indicates that the individual has strong self-efficacy with regard to the use of PDS2.
